U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Approves Funding for New Veterans Homes
May 05, 2018
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved funding from the VA State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program to build two new veterans homes in Michigan. One home will be constructed on the existing 90 acre property in Grand Rapids, and another at a location to be determined in Southeast Michigan. The VA State Home Construction Grant Program has approved up to $38 million for the Grand Rapids project, and up to $42 million for the Southeast Michigan project. Additionally, in 2016, the Michigan legislature approved $42 million in state funds for the project, bringing total funding up to around $123 million.
In 2016, Governor Rick Snyder signed PA 560 which created the Michigan Veterans’ Facilities Authority. Governed by a board of nine, their first initiative was to determine the Grand Rapids and Southeast Michigan locations. The board looks to break ground on the Grand Rapids site in September of 2018, as well as secure a site selection in Southeast Michigan in the coming months.
Many in the veteran community are thankful for the support the VA and the State of Michigan are providing. Modern veteran homes that provide veteran-centered care accessible to the veteran population honors the Country’s commitment to those that served.
