Four Oft-Overlooked VA Benefits

Four Oft-Overlooked VA Benefits

January 01, 2019

Military veterans are familiar with the healthcare and education benefits provided by the VA. Yet, there are many other benefits that can be overlooked and could prove invaluable in helping veterans with the transition from active military into civilian life. The following are four oft-overlooked VA benefits that veterans could find highly useful.

Long-term care – The VA’s Aid and Attendance benefit offers up to $25,000 annually to pay for nursing homes, assisted-living and other long-term care services for veterans. Surviving spouses qualify for up to $13,560 per year in long-term car benefits.

Transfer GI Bill Credits – Many veterans use GI Bill benefits to obtain college degrees and other advanced education. However, most do not use the full benefit. When GI Bill credits remain, veterans can transfer them to spouses and dependents to enable them to attend college for less money.

Corporate Jobs Connections – Many veterans have advanced skills and experiences that are highly useful to corporations, particularly when paired with a college degree via the GI Bill. The VA’s American Corporate Partners program matches veterans with job opportunities with some of the nation’s top corporate job providers.

VA-Foreclosed Properties – The VA provides mortgage loans, which most veterans know. It also forecloses on homes when the buyers do not maintain payments. After foreclosing on a property, the VA maintains a list of its foreclosed properties, which veterans can search and buy at a discounted price.
