Veteran Caregivers Eligible To Receive COVID-19 Vaccine
March 03, 2021
Veteran caregivers who participate in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers can receive the COVID-19 vaccine and testing through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Availability will be determined by each VA site and is subject to the resources and needs of the facility.
The VA is observing a phased vaccine distribution plan, with VA health professionals and the highest risk veterans and veteran caregivers receiving the first doses. When an eligible veteran is able to be vaccinated, their caregiver may as well.
The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers is offered to veterans who:
- Sustained or aggravated a serious injury or illness in the line of duty on or before May 7, 1975 or on or after September 11, 2001
- Have a single or combined service-connected disability rating of 70% or more
- Need personal care services (requiring in-person personal care services) for a minimum of six continuous months based on an inability to perform an activity of daily living (ADL) or a need for supervision, protection, or instruction
The program offers family caregivers of eligible veterans a financial stipend, health insurance if needed, mental health resources, travel allowances, education, respite care and more.
To apply for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers complete a joint Application (VA Form 10-10CG), found online HERE.
The COVID-19 vaccine is offered to those who choose to receive it and is administered in two doses several weeks apart. The current vaccine requires special storage and handling so not every VA facility is equipped to offer it. When it is widely available, however, it will be offered to all veterans who receive VA care as well as eligible caregivers.
