My Claim Was Approved, When Do I Get Paid?

This is a top question we are asked by our veteran clients, and it’s understandable! Your claim may have taken months to be approved, so will it take months to receive my VA disability compensation? No, it will not! Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs sends your disability benefits via a wire transfer, as opposed to a paper check.

This also brings up a friendly reminder: Please make sure your banking information is correct when sending it to VA. There have been cases where the information has been incorrect and that veteran’s benefits were sent to a different person.

But there are two types of VA compensation that everyone should know about: Back Pay (Retroactive Benefits) and Monthly. Many veterans often wonder when or how much of their compensation will be from the Back Pay award or the Monthly benefits award.

In terms of when you will receive your Monthly compensation, that award will kick in the month after your claim has been approved. For your Back Pay compensation, VA regulations say it will be paid within 15 days of your approval, but we generally see that time frame range from 15 to 30 days. But if you do not see your benefits within that time frame, we advise calling your advocate and seeing what problem may be occurring.

Home of Heroes – Dakota Meyer MOH

On September 8, 2009, Corporal Dakota L. Meyer maintained security at a patrol rally point while other members of his team moved on foot with two platoons of Afghan National Army and Border Police into the village of Ganjgal for a pre-dawn meeting with village elders.

Moving into the village, the patrol was ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns from houses and fortified positions on the slopes above.

Seizing the opportunity, Corporal Meyer along with a fellow Marine driving, took the exposed gunner’s position in a gun-truck as they drove down the steeply terraced terrain in a daring attempt to disrupt the enemy attack and locate the trapped U.S. team.

Disregarding the now intense enemy fire, Corporal Meyer killed several enemy fighters with the mounted machine guns and his rifle. Corporal Meyer would make 5 trips in total to recover more wounded Afghan soldiers and search for his missing U.S. team members.

Throughout the 6-hour battle, Corporal Meyer significantly disrupted the enemy’s attack and inspired the members of the combined force to continue the fight. His unwavering courage and steadfast devotion to the U.S. and Afghan comrades in the face of almost certain death reflected great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service.
