Does THC Help People with PTSD?

THC may help veterans with PTSD

A recent study published in Neuropharmacology shows that low doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) help treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This leading study investigates the relationship between cannabis and PTSD, focusing on the effects of THC. Other studies have shown the benefits of another active marijuana ingredient – cannabidiol or CBD.

Key Points to Ponder About

  • THC increases cerebellar activation when exposed to neutral images.
  • THC reduces adverse effects during a reassessment.
  • Higher PCC*/precuneus activation on reassessment correlated with a lesser negative impact from THC.
  • The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) is an essential interface between emotional regulation, sensing and action, and many other brain regions. It is a vital physical and functional interface between regions.

The study was experimental, and the researcher did not know which participant got the actual drug and which one got a placebo. In total, 52 participants were given either THC or a placebo before participating in an emotion regulation task while submitting to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Reports indicated that participants who received THC had fewer negative feelings while performing follow-up cognitive tasks than subjects who were given a placebo. In other words, subjects who received THC demonstrated increased brain activity in parts of the brain that typically show less activity in PTSD cases doing similar cognitive tasks.

Despite numerous studies and testing, there remains a level of skepticism about whether or not THC or CBD do assist people living with PTSD. This is a relevant observation when considering the high rate of suicide among veterans. Whether or not THC or CBD works for PTSD is often a personal choice and experience.
