Employment Opportunities for Military Veterans
October 10, 2024
Many veterans are facing a difficult time in the job market. Although they have plenty of skills, it can be hard to transfer them from the military to a civilian occupation. Luckily, there are many employers currently looking to hire veterans specifically.
Vet The Vote
Vet the Vote is an organization encouraging military workers and their families to serve as the next generation of poll workers. It’s supported by numerous corporations like Walmart and NASCAR. This program can be incredibly helpful for veterans exiting military service who need civilian job experience.
According to their website, volunteers claimed: “96% would recommend this role to other veterans and military family members”. While Vet the Vote is not a permanent occupation, it allows veterans to acclimatize to civilian work life while still serving America.
Hire Veterans
For those looking for more permanent jobs, Hire Veterans is a site that shows jobs strictly for veterans. Some of the job listings are from companies such as Tristar, Concordance Healthcare Solutions, Mitsubishi Electric and so many more.
Dell
Dell hosts its own Veteran Integration Success Program, Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program and Skillbridge program (in partnership with the Department of Defense) to give veterans opportunities to succeed after their military careers.
Boeing
Boeing is another company with an ambition to help veterans. With over 15% of their workplace comprised of veterans, they have many programs to help veterans with civilian jobs including a Military Skills Translator tool to help with job searching.
NASCAR
While NASCAR supports Vet the Vote, it also has a career mentorship program with American Corporate Partners and mental health programs for veterans.
Universal Technical Institute
Finally, for those wishing to learn a bit more before going back into the workforce, trade schools such as Universal Technical Institute are open to working with veterans to develop their skills within a year.
John Decouteau, a military veteran and VP of military admissions with the Institute says, “When those folks come here, we evaluate their joint service transcripts, their training in the military, check their ability to test out and place them maybe in a one-year program.” With over 25% of their students being veterans or reservists, the Universal Technical Institute works hard to formulate a program that will work best for that veterans to do what they desire.
