Buddy-to-Buddy Veteran Mentorship Program

February 02, 2025

The Buddy to Buddy Veteran Mentorship Program uses trained veteran volunteers to provide support and connection to resources. This is a free program open to all Michigan service members and veterans, regardless of time served or discharge status.

Buddy-to-Buddy comprises of two tiers. Tier 1 (Buddy 1s) are in-unit Guards trained and overseen by the Michigan National Guard to identify concerns. Buddy 1s can refer others to appropriate resources if they need assistance.

Tier 2 (Buddy 2s) are volunteer veterans trained in both communication and local resources. These buddies receive referrals from Buddy 1s, chaplains, or veterans who may be looking for other ways to handle their mental health challenges and other issues they are facing after service.

Buddy 2s offer community and/or military resources that can address the situation of their current Buddy. These situations can include financial struggles, education, relationship and emotional concerns. Although the program has gone through multiple iterations, the goal remains the same: assist veterans before situations escalate to crises that can create at-risk behaviors or suicide.

If you are a veteran and this program could help you, give them a call at 1-800-MICH-VET (1-800-642-4838) or fill out the Buddy to Buddy Referral Form.
