Pentagon testing new grief support app
April 04, 2019
Volunteers are needed to test out a new app designed to support survivors of loss within the military community through their grief. The Department of Defense is seeking study participants who could benefit from the program and provide feedback.
The Stepping Forward in Grief Study is being developed by Uniformed Services University and Columbia University in partnership with The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, the Travis Manion Foundation, Army Survivor Outreach Services, American Gold Star Mothers and Gold Star Wives of America. An app is being tested as an outreach tool for military survivors and their loved ones.
The app was developed after findings from the National Military Family Bereavement Study suggested that grief and other challenges related to a profound loss can persist for years for military survivors. Many would like better support and resources to help deal with the loss.
The developers of the app wanted to create an online community where members can discuss their grief with others who are also recovering from a loss. The shared experiences of the members will ideally provide a reciprocal model of support that is easy to access for everyone with an internet connection and reduce the feelings of isolation and loneliness that are common after experiencing the death of a loved one.
Enrollment is open until June 30 to family members, friends, unit members or others over the age of 18 who have experienced a loss. Interested individuals may apply online at https://steppingforwardstudy.org/.
