A Biological Wound In Brain Tissue Causes PTSD
June 06, 2022
Israeli researchers have discovered that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps alleviate PTSD symptoms in combat veterans. The supervised clinical trial revealed that the 35 Israeli Defense Force veterans enrolled demonstrated significant improvement in PTSD symptoms.
Researchers discovered that exposure to severe emotional trauma could cause organic damage to the brain, thus causing a physical wound in brain tissues that hamper psychiatric and psychological treatments.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates PTSD affects 4 percent of people globally and 30 percent of all combat personnel.
PTSD often manifests in those who have gone through a traumatic experience such as combat, a terrorist attack, or a natural disaster. Symptoms can include flashbacks of the triggering event, sleeping disorders, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares. War vets often deal with anxiety, depression, anxiety, and other issues on their return home.
Treatment in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber (HBOT) is called hyperbaric medicine. The atmospheric pressure is higher than sea-level pressure in the section, and the air is much richer in oxygen. This treatment shows excellent promise in subjects who had been resistant to psychotherapy and various drugs. The study revealed that structural and functional improvements showed that non-healing brain wounds were characteristic of PTSD.
HBOT improves the supply of oxygen to the brain, which activates the generates new neurons and blood vessels. The treatment reactivates and proliferates stem cells, generates new blood vessels, increases activity in the brain, and appears to restore functionality to wounded tissues.
Based on the encouraging result of this study, it appears that PTSD patients can experience significant improvements over time, including after the conclusion of therapy. This is good news as it may also help diagnose PTSD and not rely on personal reports of symptoms.
