Legal Services for Veterans Grant Program Enhanced

August 08, 2022

As a veteran, it’s unfortunate that one may face homelessness at some point. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continually pushes for national homeless prevention. The VA coordinates initiatives by finding ways to further the provisions of veteran legal services.

Recently, the VA found that under section 4202 of the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D., Veterans Health Care, and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020, legal services for homeless veterans and veterans at-risk for homelessness (LSV-Homeless Grant Program) would be eligible for up to 75 grants a year. The grants must at least have 10 percent of funding available to women veterans.

The grants are the first of their kind, ensuring legal services are available nationwide to veterans who need help. They are designed to assist Veterans’ legal needs related to family law issues, criminal defense, housing, income support, and requests to upgrade the characterization of a discharge. For more information on this, go to https://www.va.gov/homeless/lsv.

Although this initiative started in 2021, the long process finally came to an end with VA asking other veteran service organizations about their experiences providing service to homeless veterans. The call was for information in the following five areas:

  • Requirements and criteria to offer the program in rural areas, trust lands, or in possessions and territories of the United States.
  • What legal services need to be considered for authorization as part of the program.
  • How to assess the cost and operational effectiveness of the program.
  • General requirements and criteria the program needs to have.
  • What conditions are required for VA to receive eligible entities to receive grants under the auspices of this program?
